Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim

South↔North↔South on the corridor trails — mule bars, North Kaibab miles, rim cold into river heat, water capacity, poles, blister care, and light for the dark hours. A hike kit for a big effort, not a casual rim stroll.

This is the closet for a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim (R2R2R) hike: South↔North↔South (or the reverse) on the corridor trails — South Kaibab, Bright Angel, and North Kaibab — as a multi-day or very long effort. NPS publishes component distances only: South Kaibab 6.3 mi / 4,860 ft rim-to-river; Bright Angel 7.8 mi / 4,460 ft; North Kaibab 14.2 mi / 5,850 ft. This page does not invent a single official R2R2R mileage or finish time. The thesis is Contagrip for mule bars and mixed dirt-rock, real vest water capacity, sun layers for the heat gradient, poles for the climbs, headlamp + CORE (+ clip light) for dark hours, blister care for stacked miles, and a Watch Desk that pairs multi-day GPS with a Seiko Alpinist on a sports strap.

It is not a corridor day trail run. It is not required for casual visitors. It is not Day Hike (Daylite closet). It is not Cocodona 250 (stage race). It is not Overnight Fastpack (sleep system + Fastpack 20). It is not Sedona slickrock Cascadia, Soft Sand Mafate flotation, or Technical Rocky FriXion Bushido. R2R2R hike is stacked corridor elevation, water discipline, and overnight or very-long-day logistics — without claiming you need a race bib.

Note.

NPS frames corridor hiking as strenuous; overnight camping at corridor campgrounds requires a backcountry permit. Day hiking does not. Check current trail, bridge, and water status before you go — conditions change. Confirm pricing at the retailer. Links go to brand + model when available.
NPS · Backcountry Trail Distances

Cite the trails. Do not invent the race.

“Elevation change from rim to river is 4860 ft… along a 6.3 mile trail” (South Kaibab); Bright Angel is 7.8 miles / 4,460 ft; North Kaibab is 14.2 mi / 5,850 ft rim-to-river.

NPS — Backcountry Trail Distances

A South↔North↔South R2R2R uses those corridor trails in sequence. NPS publishes the segments — not an official R2R2R finish time, not a race kit, and not a requirement for casual visitors. Overnight at Havasupai Gardens, Bright Angel, or Cottonwood campgrounds requires a backcountry permit; day hiking does not. This kit follows water capacity, layers, light, poles, and blister care for that stacked effort — without a sleep-system Fastpack closet.

Water stations are seasonal and change — verify on NPS before you drop in. Do not invent which taps are on. Check key hiking messages for current closures and bridge status. Under-claim only.

NPS hiking FAQ · permits

Arizona · Grand Canyon corridor

South Kaibab · Bright Angel · North Kaibab

South Kaibab 6.3 mi / 4,860 ft; Bright Angel 7.8 mi / 4,460 ft; North Kaibab 14.2 mi / 5,850 ft — all rim-to-river, NPS figures.

R2R2R framing: stack those corridor segments South↔North↔South (route choice varies). NPS under-claim only — no invented finish times or race stats. Pre-dawn and night hours need light; river heat needs electrolytes and a real water plan; overnight corridor camping needs a permit.

Guadalupe Peak Trail

“Guadalupe Peak is a rewarding, although very strenuous, 8.4 mile round trip hike with a 3,000 foot elevation gain.”

Different canyon system, same thesis: heat, elevation, water discipline, poles useful on the descent, headlamp if you chase dawn or dusk. NPS calls for at least one gallon per person per day in summer — not a Grand Canyon double-crossing, and not claimed as one.

Multi-day GPS + mountain Alpinist

R2R2R asks for two different tools on the wrist. Apex 2 handles maps, ascent, and battery across long canyon hours. The Seiko Alpinist SPB155 rides rubber or NATO for quiet timekeeping when the phone stays deep in the vest — leave the dress bracelet at home.

COROS Apex 2 GPS watch
Smart

COROS Apex 2

~$449 · Buy at Amazon

Sapphire outdoor GPS — dual-frequency GNSS and the battery life for multi-day or very long corridor hours. Photographed: Apex 2.

Apex 2 is COROS’s mid-pack outdoor computer — maps and training load in a package light enough for long trail days, strong enough for multi-day canyon hours.

COROS — Apex 2 · DC Rainmaker context

Why Apex 2 on R2R2R: Stacked Kaibab miles need honest pace, ascent, and battery that lasts through a multi-day or very long corridor effort — maps when the canyon forks, turnaround cues when you’re deep below the rim.

Seiko Alpinist SPB155

~$725 · SPB155 · Seiko USA

38mm “Baby” Alpinist — green fumé dial, 200 m, 70-hour 6R35. Canyon desk: rubber or NATO, not the bracelet. Photographed: SPB155.

“Looking for a field watch with more of a refined touch that is still capable of accompanying you on pretty much whatever adventure you can think of? … Look no further — your Seiko has arrived.”

aBlogtoWatch — Benjamin Lowry, Oct 15, 2021

Why SPB155 on rubber/NATO: A mountain field watch that feels at home on the corridor. On a 20 mm rubber or NATO strap it stays comfortable through rim heat and mule-bar switchbacks; the bracelet stays home. No screens to charge, no notifications to ignore — just the time when your phone is buried in the vest.

Also: aBlogtoWatch review
Pair them. Apex 2 for maps, ascent, and multi-day battery. SPB155 on rubber or NATO for quiet timekeeping when the phone stays in the vest. GPS keeps the corridor logistics honest; the Alpinist keeps the hours simple on exposed switchbacks — and it will still be ticking long after the GPS cycle. Apex 2 for GPS. SPB155 for time-only.
Salomon Genesis trail running shoe

01 · Hero shoe · Contagrip

Salomon Genesis

Matryx upper, Energy Foam + Active Chassis, Contagrip diamond/arrowhead lugs — built for rocky mountain trail, not dune flotation and not FriXion scramble spikes. Photographed: Genesis Black/Electric Green/Tomato.

“With 4.5-millimeter-deep diamond and arrowhead-shaped lugs, the Salomon Genesis Contagrip rubber outsole excels on rocky and rugged terrain and offers great grip on technical trails.”

iRunFar — Annie Behrend, Apr 11, 2024

Why Genesis on R2R2R: Mule bars, packed dirt, and intermittent rock want sticky Contagrip and chassis support across stacked climbs — grip and stability for the corridor’s mixed surface, mile after mile.

REI Co-op Swiftland 5 hydration vest

In Jeremy’s kit
~$100 · Buy at REI

Hydration vest with soft-flask fronts — carry enough to bridge dry stretches and refill only where NPS says water is on. Photographed: Swiftland 5.

R2R2R is a water plan first. Vest volume for flasks, filter, gels, shell, lamp, and blister kit across dry corridor stretches.

REI Co-op Swiftland 5

In Jeremy’s kit: Swiftland is the vest lane when handheld volume is a joke on long Arizona corridor efforts.

HydraPak SkyFlask Speed IT 500ml

03 · Flask · insulated strap

HydraPak SkyFlask Speed IT 500
In Jeremy’s kit

Insulated soft flask with strap — keeps a cold sip longer when the Inner Canyon cooks. Photographed: SkyFlask Speed IT 500.

Pair with the vest. One flask for mix, one for plain — or whatever split keeps you drinking before thirst.

HydraPak SkyFlask Speed IT

In Jeremy’s kit: SkyFlask Speed IT is the insulated flask lane on hot corridor and long trail efforts.

Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z poles

04 · Poles · climb out

Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z
~$190–$220 · Buy at Black Diamond

Folding carbon Z-poles — stash on descents, deploy when Bright Angel or North Kaibab becomes a ladder. Photographed: Distance Carbon Z.

Useful insurance for quads on stacked corridor climbs — elevation work, pure and simple.

Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z

Why Carbon Z here: R2R2R stacks rim-to-river climbs. Poles are the anti-bonk tool when mule bars and North Kaibab miles pile up.

Petzl Actik headlamp

05 · Lamp · pre-dawn rim

Petzl Actik
In Jeremy’s kit
check current · Buy at Petzl

Hybrid Concept headlamp — pre-dawn rim starts and dark corridor hours on a multi-day or very long effort. Photographed: Actik.

R2R2R safety includes dark hours. Actik covers the rim and canyon night when the effort starts — or continues — before daylight.

Petzl Actik

In Jeremy’s kit: Actik is the everyday trail lamp when the effort begins — or continues — before the canyon lights up.

Petzl CORE rechargeable battery

06 · Power · Hybrid spare

Petzl CORE
In Jeremy’s kit
~$40 · REI search

Rechargeable CORE battery for Actik Hybrid Concept — top off at the hotel, AAA fallback if needed. Photographed: CORE.

Dark-hour efforts fail on dead lamps. CORE keeps the Actik honest across a long canyon clock.

Petzl CORE

In Jeremy’s kit: CORE rides with Actik so rim starts and night miles are not a battery gamble.

07 · Clip light · vest / camp

Olight Oclip Pro OD Green
In Jeremy’s kit

Magnetic / clamp clip light — vest-strap or pack-clip backup so Actik stays free for trail night miles. Photographed: Oclip Pro OD Green.

Olight — Oclip Pro

In Jeremy’s kit: Oclip Pro OD Green is the clip-light lane when you want hands-free vest light beside Actik.

When the Duckbill alone cannot beat canyon glare, NoFry covers neck and arms.

KETL NoFry

In Jeremy’s kit: NoFry is the sun layer when a run cap alone cannot beat desert glare.

GU Roctane Energy Gel

GU Roctane Energy Gel

~$3–$4 / gel · Buy at Amazon

Primary gel lane — R2R2R burns matches on every climb out. Photographed: Roctane.

Eat before the bonk. North Kaibab and Bright Angel do not negotiate.

GU Roctane

In Jeremy’s kit: Roctane is the primary gel lane on longer trail days.

Honey Stinger Energy Gel with Electrolytes

12 · Fuel · electrolyte gel

Honey Stinger Energy Gel + Electrolytes
In Jeremy’s kit
~$1.50–$2 / gel · Buy at Amazon

Second gel flavor with electrolytes — rotate with Roctane so the vest does not taste like one note. Photographed: Honey Stinger Electrolyte Gel.

Heat gradient days want salt with sugar, not hope.

Honey Stinger

In Jeremy’s kit: Honey Stinger sits next to Roctane on longer hot efforts.

BPN G.1.M Sport carbohydrate electrolyte mix

13 · Drink mix · carbs + salt

BPN G.1.M Sport
In Jeremy’s kit
~$30–$40 / tub · Buy at Amazon

Carb + electrolyte mix for the flask lane — pairs with plain water in the other bottle. Photographed: G.1.M Sport.

Stacked corridor heat is not all plain water. Mix earns a flask.

BPN G.1.M Sport

In Jeremy’s kit: G.1.M Sport is the drink-mix lane on longer hot trail days.

Body Glide Original pocket stick

14 · Skin · anti-chafe

Body Glide Original
In Jeremy’s kit
~$8–$12 · Buy at Amazon

Swipe before you leave the rim. Heat plus pack straps is still a chafe machine.

Creepers Anti-Blister Merino Quarter Crew socks

15 · Socks · longer trail

Creepers Anti-Blister Merino Quarter Crew

Leukotape P sports tape

16 · Feet · tape

Leukotape P
~$10–$16 · Buy at Amazon

High-adhesive zinc-oxide blister tape — pre-tape hot spots before the descent trashes them. Photographed: Leukotape P.

Deal with feet early. Dust, sweat, and 4,000+ ft of climbing punish hesitation.

Leukotape P

Why Leukotape here: R2R2R blister desk with Creepers + Body Glide — prevention before hot spots cascade.

Sawyer Squeeze water filter

17 · Water · filter backup

Sawyer Squeeze
~$40–$45 · Buy at Amazon

0.1-micron hollow-fiber filter — backup when piped water is off or you need opportunistic refill discipline. Photographed: Sawyer Squeeze.

NPS water status changes. Carry a plan that does not invent which taps are on.

Sawyer Squeeze · verify NPS water updates

Why Sawyer here: Under-claim corridor water. Filter is insurance for R2R2R logistics, not a license to skip checking NPS.

Patagonia Houdini wind jacket

18 · Layer · emergency wind

Patagonia Houdini
~$99–$119 · Buy at Patagonia

Fist-sized wind shell — rim mornings bite; Inner Canyon may not need it, but the vest still carries it. Photographed: Houdini.

Start cold at 7,000 ft. Dump the shell when the canyon oven turns on.

Patagonia Houdini

Why Houdini here: A light emergency layer for rim cold and wind — fist-sized in the vest, gone when the canyon oven turns on.
