Marathon Race Day

A bus before dawn, a long cold wait, a corral, and then 26.2 miles you already trained for. Nothing new today. Shed the layer, start slow, and wait for the late miles.

This is the kit for the marathon itself, not the training block: the early bus, the wait in the start village, the corral, the race, and the walk out of the finish. It takes two races. One is the Mesa Marathon, which starts below the white Phoenix sign on Usery Mountain and drops toward downtown Mesa. The other is the New York City Marathon, which runs through all five boroughs and finishes in Central Park. This year it is Sunday, Nov 1.

The thesis is that race day is the one day you buy almost nothing, because everything on your body should already have been through a long run. The shoe is a race shoe you have tested: an ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo. A Saysky Combat Pro Singlet to pin the bib to and Saysky Pace Shorts 5". Saysky Combat Quarter socks. Neversecond C30 gels, 30 grams of carbs each. Body Glide before you get dressed. A Swiss Safe Mylar blanket for the cold wait, plus an old sweatshirt you are happy to donate at the start. On the wrist, a 32-gram COROS PACE 4 and a Tissot PRX Chronograph that counts the hours.

Note.

Medical staff are on every big-city marathon course. Use them if you feel ill, and stop if you need to. Fuel, anti-chafe, and pacing here are not medical advice. Race rules change every year, so read your race’s current runner guide for bags, permitted items, and start times. Confirm current pricing at the retailer.

Cover the moves. Wait for mile 23.

“It took me seven years to do this.”

Runner’s World — Shalane’s NYC Triumph: “I’ve Dreamed of This Since I Was a Little Girl” (Erin Strout)

Runner’s World’s Erin Strout reported that Shalane Flanagan won the 2017 New York City Marathon in 2:26:53, “the first American woman to do so in 40 years.” Her first marathon had been New York in 2010, where she was second. Afterward she said the win “hopefully inspires the next generation of American women to just be patient.”

The race itself was patient. Strout writes that Mary Keitany surged at mile 14 and broke up the lead pack. Flanagan covered the move and let Keitany set the pace until mile 23, then took the lead and built a 30-second gap. Her coach, Jerry Schumacher, described the plan: “The strategy was that we were going to cover any move—it didn’t matter if it happened five miles in or if it happened 22 miles in, she was going to cover any move that was made.” Most of us are not covering moves. We are covering our own early miles, which is the same discipline: do not spend it before mile 20.

Nothing new

From Runner’s World (Pamela Nisevich Bede, M.S., R.D., Oct 31, 2025): “Don’t try anything on race day that you haven’t practiced during training.” Check what the course serves at its fuel stops. If it is not what you trained with, the advice is “BYOG (bring your own gel).”

On amounts, the same piece says to “start with 30 grams of carbs every 30 to 45 minutes” on runs longer than an hour, and to adjust that in training, not on race day.

“Any clothing that is shed along the course or at an aid station will be collected and donated to charity.”

Mesa Marathon — Start & Finish

The race says the course “begins below the large white Phoenix sign painted on Usery Mountain,” with “nearly 1,000 feet of net elevation loss in this fast Boston Qualifier.” Its elevation table starts at 2,082 feet and finishes at 1,201 feet at Riverview Park. The start is at 6:30 a.m. Marathoners have to ride the race buses, which leave Sloan Park from 4:00 to 5:00 a.m., so plan on a long wait in the desert before sunrise. The race lists an average low of 46F at the start and warns that “temperatures may be considerably cooler in the morning particularly at the marathon start.” That is what the Mylar and the throwaway sweatshirt are for. The race asks runners to shed clothing near an aid station, not just anywhere.

“Please allow ample time to clear security, place items in clothing donation bins, use the toilets, and enter your start corral.”

New York Road Runners — 2025 TCS New York City Marathon Runner Guide

PIX11’s Hiral Patel (Oct 13, 2026) reports that this year’s course crosses five bridges, has “about 945 feet of elevation gain,” and has “the first change to the course in 15 years,” a reroute in the Bronx. The five-borough course was first run on Oct. 24, 1976. NYRR’s 2025 runner guide says the bib goes on your “front outer layer of clothing,” that “THERE WILL BE NO BAG CHECK AT THE START,” and that “Mylar blankets or heat sheets” are permitted at the start. The finish is on West Drive at West 67th Street. Read the 2026 guide for this year’s rules before you pack.

Smartwatch + Analog

Watch Desk

Two ways to know your pace over 26.2 miles. The COROS PACE 4 does the GPS math. The Tissot PRX Chronograph starts when you cross the mat and counts up to 12 hours, and you check it against the official mile markers.

COROS PACE 4 GPS watch black with black nylon band
Smartwatch · AMOLED, 32 grams on nylon

COROS PACE 4

~$249 · Black · nylon band · Buy at Amazon

GPS watch with a 1.2" AMOLED touchscreen. COROS lists 41 GPS hours and 19 days of daily use. Photographed: PACE 4, Black, nylon band.

COROS: “At just 32 grams with the nylon band, PACE 4 is lighter than the gel tucked into your pocket.”

COROS — COROS PACE 4

Why PACE 4 here: Tom’s Guide’s Nick Harris-Fry raced the 2026 London Marathon with it (Apr 28, 2026) and wrote that both watches he wore “were hitting mile splits quite close to the markers on the course too, though I did reset the lap counter a couple of times to bring them nearer in line to the markers.” His tip on the band: “I’d go for nylon to make the watch even lighter.” Honest caveat from the same piece: around the tall buildings of Canary Wharf, “I did notice my split pace stats going a little haywire in that area.”

Tissot PRX Automatic Chronograph 42mm silver panda dial steel integrated bracelet
Analog · automatic chronograph, 12-hour counter

Tissot PRX Automatic Chronograph

~$2,150 · 42 mm · silver dial, black subdials · steel bracelet · Buy at Tissot

42mm steel chronograph with a Valjoux A05.H31 automatic movement and 12-hour, 30-minute, and 60-second counters. Tissot lists it at 14.54mm thick, 184 grams, and 100 meters of water resistance. Photographed: PRX Chronograph, T137.427.11.011.00.

Hodinkee’s Danny Milton: “Both dial options bring high contrast and easy readability.”

Hodinkee — You Thought You Knew The Tissot PRX, But Say Hello To The PRX Chronograph · Mar 13, 2022

Why go analog on marathon day: Coach Cory Smith wrote in Outside (Oct 29, 2019) that in New York, GPS signals “can get blocked or end up bouncing off the buildings and bridges,” and that “The only way to have 100% confidence your race pace is accurate and you’re on your way to your goal finish time is to use the course mile markers as your pacing cues.” A chronograph with a 12-hour counter does exactly that. Start it on the mat, and at each marker read the elapsed time against your pace band. It never drifts off the course. NYCRUNS puts it plainly: “Don’t throw out your GPS but respect its limitations.” Honest caveats: at 184 grams it is almost six PACE 4s, so try it on a long run first. Milton was “just not a fan of the rose gold against the silver dial.” Hodinkee’s launch price was $1,750. Tissot now lists it at $2,150.

Pair them. The PACE 4 records the race and does the pace math. The PRX shows elapsed time since the mat, and you check it at the mile markers. Flanagan’s race is Runner’s World’s “Shalane’s NYC Triumph” (Nov 5, 2017).

ASICS METASPEED SKY TOKYO racing shoe Flash Red Black lateral view

01 · Shoe · tested before today

ASICS METASPEED™ SKY TOKYO
~$270 · Unisex · Flash Red/Black · Buy at ASICS

Plated race shoe with an FF LEAP™ foam bottom layer and FF TURBO™ PLUS on top. Doctors of Running lists it at 5.9 oz in a men’s 9, with a 39.5 mm heel and 34.5 mm forefoot stack and a 5 mm drop. Photographed: METASPEED SKY TOKYO, Flash Red/Black.

Doctors of Running’s David Salas: “The shoe genuinely does feel good at all paces ranging from 5k to marathon and can easily be used for all distances.”

Doctors of Running — ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo Review (2025) · Jun 10, 2025

Why Sky Tokyo here: ASICS says it is built for “stride-style runners who are looking to start fast and finish faster,” and pitches it to help you “kick-through the 30km wall.” That is the part of the race this kit cares about. Honest caveat from the same review: Salas found the heel unstable and wrote, “for me it will probably be half marathon and down, just because of the heel instability.” Run your long runs in it before you race in it. If it does not work, race in the shoe that did.

Saysky men’s Combat Pro Singlet black

02 · Singlet · the bib goes here

Saysky Combat Pro Singlet
~$60 · Men’s · Black · Buy at Saysky

Lightweight race singlet in Japanese DELTAPEAK® Carat™ fabric. Photographed: men’s Combat Pro Singlet, Black.

Saysky: “Featherlight and quick-drying, yet exceptionally durable, this singlet is made to perform season after season - no matter the pace.”

Saysky — Combat Pro Singlet

Why Combat Pro here: Saysky says the fabric “delivers superior breathability, moisture management, and anti-cling comfort.” Once the sweatshirt comes off, this is your outer layer, and NYRR says the bib goes on the front of it and has to stay visible. Pin it the night before. Wear it on a long run first so you know where it rubs.

Saysky men’s Pace Shorts 5 inch black

03 · Shorts · no flap at mile 20

Saysky Pace Shorts 5"
~$77 · Men’s · Black · Buy at Saysky

5" running short with a slimmer leg opening, a mesh brief liner, and storage. Lightweight and quick-drying. Photographed: men’s Pace Shorts 5", Black.

Saysky: “a trusted choice for both daily training and race day.”

Saysky — Pace Shorts 5"

Why Pace Shorts here: Saysky says they are “built for speed, comfort, and everyday miles.” Shorts are where chafe starts late in a marathon, so race in the pair you did your last long run in. Count how many gels you can carry in them before race day, not in the corral.

Saysky Combat Quarter Socks black

04 · Socks · the ones you trained in

Saysky Combat Quarter Socks
~$20 · Black · Buy at Saysky

Thin quarter-height running sock for training and racing. Photographed: Combat Quarter Socks, Black.

Saysky: “so thin you’ll feel fully in sync with your shoes.”

Saysky — Combat Quarter Socks

Why Combat Quarter here: Saysky says they are “built for both training and racing.” The Running Channel’s Mark Dredge (Oct 10, 2025) lists what “nothing new on race day” is for: “We want to avoid chafing and blisters, we want to know that our shoes and socks fit perfectly.” Socks are cheap enough to buy two pairs and break in both.

Neversecond C30 Energy Gel citrus 60ml pouch

05 · Fuel · 30 grams at a time

Neversecond C30 Energy Gel
~$42 · Citrus · 12-pack · Buy at Amazon

60ml energy gel with 30g of carbohydrate in a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio, 200mg of sodium, and no caffeine. Photographed: C30 Energy Gel, Citrus.

Neversecond: “Carbohydrate + Sodium in One Gel. No Water Required.”

Neversecond — C30 Energy Gel

Why C30 here: Runner’s World’s starting point is 30 grams of carbs every 30 to 45 minutes, and one C30 is 30 grams, so the math is one gel per window. Neversecond says the texture is “smooth, liquid-like” and “easy to consume at high intensity, with or without water.” Practice it on long runs at race pace. If your race serves a different gel, carry your own.

Body Glide Original anti chafe balm 0.8 oz stick

06 · Anti-chafe · before you get dressed

Body Glide Original Anti Chafe Balm
In Jeremy’s kit
~$10 · 0.8 oz · Buy at Amazon

Plant-derived anti-chafe stick with no petroleum, lanolin, or mineral oils. Photographed: Body Glide Original, 0.8 oz.

Body Glide: “Apply Before You Get Dressed, On Thighs, Neck, Arms, And Anywhere Skin Is Rubbed.”

Body Glide — Original Anti Chafe Balm

Why Body Glide here: Over 26.2 miles, small rubs turn into big ones. Put it on at home before the singlet and shorts go on, because there is no good place to do it in a start village. Body Glide says it is “Clothing, footwear and wetsuit safe.” Not medical advice.

Swiss Safe emergency Mylar thermal blankets silver 10 pack

07 · Start village · the cold wait

Swiss Safe Emergency Mylar Blanket
~$13 · Silver · 10-pack · Buy at Amazon

Folded aluminized Mylar thermal blankets with a bonus mini blanket. Photographed: Swiss Safe Emergency Blanket, Silver, 10-pack.

Swiss Safe: “Built with military-grade 12-micron aluminized polyethylene mylar.”

Swiss Safe — Emergency Blanket, 10 Pack

Why Mylar here: NYRR’s 2025 guide lists “Mylar blankets or heat sheets” as permitted at the start, and the Mesa Marathon buses leave hours before a cold 6:30 a.m. start. Wrap up over an old sweatshirt while you wait, then drop the sweatshirt in a donation bin before the corral. Ten blankets is enough to share with the people sitting next to you on the grass.
