This is the closet for running to work, or home from it. Phoenix’s Grand Canalscape — lit, paved, and off the street — or the South Bank of the Thames from Westminster to Tower Bridge before the crowds. The thesis is carry: a Kilometer Studios Backpack Pro that holds a laptop without bouncing, a Brooks Ghost 18 for the concrete, and a Watch Desk that pairs a Garmin Forerunner 570 with a Victorinox I.N.O.X. Automatic on black rubber.
The other half of the kit lives at the desk. A Ministry of Supply Apollo shirt that survives a roll, a PackTowl, a pouch of Ursa Major wipes for the no-shower days. Reflective Proviz shell and an Olight Oclip Pro for the dark ends of the day; open-ear Shokz so the bus behind you is never a surprise.
Note.
Confirm current pricing at the retailer. No shower at work? Run home instead. In Phoenix heat, go at first light or not at all, and carry water in the pack. Keep the load light — leave shoes and toiletries at the office. Links go to the brand + model when available.

Soldiers, madmen, commuters
“Now it seems that every second runner I see is sporting a backpack and a sense of purpose.”
The Guardian — How to start run-commuting (Simon Freeman)
Freeman wrote it for the first global run to work day, and the advice has aged well. The logistics rule comes first: “It might be obvious, but if you don't have a shower at work, don't run to work. Run home.” Too far? “Just get off the train or bus before your stop and run the rest of the way.”
On kit he names merino, a waterproof that wicks, and a pack big enough for essentials, with valuables in a waterproof stuffsack. And the payoff runs both directions: arrive “feeling awake, alive and more than a little virtuous,” or run home as “an opportunity to clear your mind of all the detritus of the day.”

From the field
Start with one direction. Leave a week of shirts, a pair of office shoes, and a toiletry bag at work, so the pack only carries the laptop and the day’s clothes. RunnersConnect’s Jeff Gaudette puts the ceiling plainly: “limit weight to 6-8 pounds maximum.”

Grand Canalscape
“The Grand Canalscape is a 12-mile continuous, multi-use recreational trail system along the Grand Canal in Phoenix – providing a unique opportunity for people to safely walk, run or bike along a dedicated off-street pathway.”
City of Phoenix — Grand Canalscape
The City lists a 10- to 12-foot concrete path with dusk-to-dawn pedestrian lighting and signalized crossings at major intersections, running from the I-17 east to the Tempe border near 56th Street, plus a west segment from 75th to 47th Avenue. It names 25 neighborhood connections and three nearby light-rail stations — Central & Campbell, 44th Street & Washington, and Priest & Washington in Tempe — which makes Freeman’s get-off-early trick easy. Downtown and Tempe ASU campuses are both on the City’s list of destinations near the route.

About the Grand Canal
London · South Bank / Thames Path
Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge
“The South Bank has wide pedestrian paths that run along the River Thames (except for a few hundred metres) from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge with no traffic.”
Where to Run in London — River Thames Sightseeing
The elsewhere twin: about 2.4 miles on the South Bank, with a short inland detour between Southwark Bridge and London Bridge. The same guide’s advice is a commuter’s schedule anyway — run before 9 a.m., because the South Bank “gets very busy.” It is a slice of the Thames Path National Trail, which runs 185 miles from the river’s source in the Cotswolds to Woolwich. And London earned the setting: in 2014 The Guardian’s Sarah Marsh reported that Run2Work founder Gordon Lott saw the city as “a pioneer of the movement.”

Why 570 here: Android Authority’s Kaitlyn Cimino found it “versatile enough to wear all day, not just during workouts.” Honest caveat from the same review: “It’s a fantastic watch caught in a pricing purgatory.”

Why go analog on a commute: Extramilest’s Flo, who runs a half-marathon home from work: “I try to see the run commute as a mellow run, so low heart rate, and also not trying to get there in a specific time. That way you don’t have to rush through the traffic lights and you don’t get annoyed by the traffic lights, you accept them as part of the running commute.” Hands tell you whether you will make nine o’clock. The red lights are free rest.

Pair them. Garmin on the days the commute is a workout or the route home is dark — LiveTrack running, coffee on the wrist. Victorinox on the ordinary days, when the run is just transport and the watch has to clean up for the meeting. Data for training. Steel for the office.
