This is the closet for running trails with your dog: a leash clipped to your hips, water for two, and gear for the paws doing the work barefoot. Sonoran desert singletrack at first light. High-sage double-track in the Wasatch back. The dog sets the joy; you set the limits.
The thesis is control, water, and paws. A Ruffwear Trail Runner Belt and stretch leash so both hands stay free and a lunge does not reach your shoulder. A Non-stop dogwear Freemotion harness so the pull lands on the body, not the throat. A CamelBak Zephyr Pro with a flask for each of you and a HydraPak Rover bowl. A Swamp Cooler vest, Grip Trex boots, and Musher’s Secret for hot ground. Topo Ultraventure 5 underfoot for door-to-dirt miles. On the wrist, an Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro with a built-in flashlight for the dark, cool hours, and a Bertucci A-2T Vintage you can read with one hand on the leash.
Note.
Confirm current pricing at the retailer. Ask your vet before you start running with your dog, and build mileage slowly. Dogs are not allowed on Phoenix city trails when it is over 100°F, and a leash of six feet or shorter is required. Test the ground: hand flat for 10 seconds — if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for them. Carry all the dog’s water; desert trailheads often have none. Pick up and carry out every bag. Stop if the dog lags, lies down in shade, or pants hard with dark gums.

She just goes
“Heading to the trail, she never asks about the weather, our route, or how far we are going. She just goes, with no hesitation or fear.”
iRunFar — Canine Partners: Caring For Your Trail Running Dog’s Health (Aliza Lapierre)
Aliza Lapierre’s piece on her Border Collie mutt, Twig, is the whole page in one line: the dog will go anywhere, so the thinking is yours. Lapierre took her questions to her veterinarian, Dr. Ryan Canales, who carries water “just for the dogs” when the route is dry. Her own conclusion is the kit list: “In the beginning, I griped about carrying the extra supplies, but now I have made it common practice to carry extra water for her along with ample snacks.”
Trail Runner Magazine’s trail-dog guide adds the hard lines from Dr. Justine Lee, a board-certified emergency and critical-care veterinarian: “If temperature plus humidity is more than 150, it’s too hot to run with your dog.” And on recall: “If you don’t have ‘leave it,’ always have your dog on a leash.”

From the field
City of Phoenix, Keep Your Dog Safe on the Trails: “Lay your hand flat on the ground for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for them.” The same page lists the rules — no dogs on trails over 100°F, a leash six feet or shorter, and pick-up required.
Trail Runner Magazine: watch for excessive panting, dark gums, and a tongue hanging out — “These are signs that the dog is too hot or exhausted.”

“If you bring a dog, it better be very leash controlled due to close proximity of Cholla cactus on trail sides.”
City of Phoenix — Sonoran Preserve Trails (Desert Tortoise Trail)
More than 9,600 acres and 36 miles of trail across three trailheads. From Apache Wash Trailhead (1600 E. Sonoran Desert Dr.), the Apache Wash Loop is a 5.6-mile easy dirt loop through cactus gardens, and Badger Brawl runs fairly flat across several wide dry washes. The loop is popular with mountain bikers. Vault toilets, no drinkable water — carry everything the dog drinks. Parking 5 a.m.–7 p.m.; trails 5 a.m.–11 p.m. Dogs on a six-foot-or-shorter leash, never on trails over 100°F, and every bag carried out. Some wash sections can be impassable in monsoon season.

“This pup paradise offers over 40 miles of trail where dogs can roam off-leash.”
Visit Park City — Trails for Dogs and Dog Etiquette (Rachel Friedman Elberts) · Mar 27, 2025
Round Valley is the open space where off-leash is allowed — under voice and sight control. Leash up in parking lots and within 150 feet of the trailhead, carry a physical leash at all times (an e-collar does not count), no more than four dogs off-leash per person, and a license tag on the collar. Stay on the main double-track when it is busy to avoid dog–bike collisions. Minimal shade and no water, so carry it. Moose live here: leash immediately and back off. Park City sits around 7,000 feet, so go easier on a dog that lives low.

Smartwatch + Analog
Watch Desk
Two lanes for runs with a dog on the line. An Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro — dual-band GPS, offline maps, and an LED flashlight on the case — for the dark, cool hours when desert dogs actually get to run. A Bertucci A-2T Vintage on drab nylon: a titanium field watch that glows without a button and has no spring bars for a leash to pop.

Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro
Sapphire lens, titanium-alloy bezel, 3,000-nit AMOLED, dual-band GPS across six satellite systems, offline topo maps, and a two-color LED flashlight with red, white, and SOS modes. Amazfit claims about 38 hours in accurate GPS and up to 25 days of typical use on the 48 mm. Photographed: T-Rex 3 Pro 48 mm.
Wareable’s Julia Clarke: “an LED flashlight that genuinely rivals the best in the business,” with a dimmable white beam that “provides enough illumination to navigate a dark trail.”
Wareable — Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro review · Feb 18, 2026
The job: In the desert the dog’s best miles are before sunrise. A light on the wrist finds the leash clip, the bag, and the trail edge without a headlamp. Honest caveats from the same review: it is a chunky watch, and auto-rerouting was still a work in progress when it was tested.

Bertucci A-2T Vintage
40 mm Unibody titanium case with integrated solid lug bars, black Duramax finish, R-Type sapphire with AR, screw-down crown and caseback, 200 m water resistance, Swiss quartz with a five-year battery, and Swiss Super Luminous hands and markers. Photographed: A-2T Vintage #12028.
Blair Witkowski on the solid lug bars: “I’ve popped a few over the years by catching a watch on a door latch and even a shopping cart. The solid, integrated bars take that issue out of the picture.”
techwriteredc — Long Term Review: Bertucci A2-T Vintage Titanium · Bertucci — A-2T Vintage #12028
Why go analog with a dog: One hand is on the leash, the other is on a bag or a bowl. Bertucci’s lume glows without a button push and, in the brand’s words, does not “require two hand operation.” Integrated bars mean a leash wrap cannot pop a spring bar. Quartz shrugs off lunges. Set the turnaround at the trailhead — before the ground gets hot — and read it at a glance.
Pair them. T-Rex 3 Pro for the pre-dawn start and the trail you are still learning — flashlight, maps, a track back to the car. Bertucci for the loop you know by heart, when the plan is a turnaround time and a dog who comes home with good paws. GearJunkie’s Sean McCoy on his A-2T Super Classic: a price that lets him use it “without wincing every time I whack it on a rock.”
