Treadmill Run

No wind, no corners, no traffic, and no breeze. Set the belt, cover the screen, point a fan at your face, and let the minutes go by.

This is the kit for the run you do indoors on purpose: when Phoenix closes its hardest trails for an Extreme Heat Warning, when it is pouring in Portland, or when an Ottawa winter buries every road. The belt sets the pace and nothing outside gets a vote. What changes is the gear. There is no breeze to cool you, your wrist has to guess your distance, and the gym treadmill may stop you at 60 minutes.

The thesis is to make the belt honest and the room bearable. The shoe is a daily trainer for easy miles: a Mizuno Wave Rider 30. An NPE Runn reads the belt itself and sends speed and incline to your watch. A Vornado 660 stands in for the wind. Powerbeats Pro 2 for the music, an Owala FreeSip and DripDrop for the mini aid station, and a Rainleaf towel to drape over the screen. On the wrist, an Apple Watch Series 12 that pairs with compatible gym treadmills, and a Mido Ocean Star 200C whose bezel keeps counting when the treadmill resets.

Note.

Use the treadmill’s safety clip if it has one, and step off to the side rails before you change anything big. Fuel, hydration, and heart-rate numbers here are not medical advice. Gym treadmills differ in top speed, incline, and auto-stop rules, so check the one you are on. Confirm current pricing at the retailer.

Cover the screen. Run the miles.

“The success you’re looking for is in the work you’re not willing to do.”

Runner’s World — A 2:09 Marathoner Trained on a Treadmill for 3 Months. Here Are His 5 Tips for Getting Faster Indoors. (Kristine Kearns)

Runner’s World’s Kristine Kearns reported that Canadian marathoner Thomas Nobbs spent three months of an Ottawa winter on a gym treadmill, “clocking about 130 miles per week on the belt.” His longest long runs were about three hours, or about 28 miles, without getting off. Then he won the McKirdy Micro Marathon in Valley Cottage, New York, in 2:09:25, three minutes faster than his previous best. The line above is from his coach, Brant Stachel.

The useful parts are small. Nobbs “runs with a 1 percent grade for all his workouts to simulate air resistance outside.” On easy days “he covers the screen with a towel during easy efforts” and goes by effort instead: “If you’re just constantly checking the watch, then the minutes are going to go by really slow.” And the gym sometimes cut him off: “Many treadmills at the gym are automatically programmed to stop your run after 60 minutes.” When that happened, he said, “There were times where I would jump to the next treadmill as quickly as I could or would have to reset the treadmill to finish the last couple minutes of a workout.”

The 1 percent question

The 1% advice comes from a 1996 University of Brighton study by Andrew Jones and Jonathan Doust in the Journal of Sports Sciences. Runner’s World (Phil Latter, Dec 13, 2011) quotes Doust: “The energy cost of running outdoors is always greater than running indoors whatever the pace.”

The same piece gives the cutoffs: “At paces slower than 8 mph (7:30/mile pace), no adjustment is necessary,” and “Between 8 mph and 11.2 mph (5:21 pace), a 1 percent treadmill grade provides the right adjustment.” On the slow end, Doust says, “The difference is so small as to be meaningless.”

Phoenix Extreme Heat Warning days

“In 2024, Phoenix experienced 45 days of trail closures due to extreme heat warnings between May 1 and October 13, with a total of 121 days reaching temperatures of 105°F or higher.”

City of Phoenix — Phoenix Trail Heat Safety Program

When the National Weather Service issues an Extreme Heat Warning, the city restricts the Echo Canyon and Cholla trails at Camelback Mountain and “The Piestewa Peak Summit trail and associated trails” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Three trails at South Mountain are included too. The city’s page also says that in 2024, “69 of those days exceeded 110°F.” Those are hiking trails, not running routes, but the math is the same for a run: on those days the treadmill is the place for the afternoon miles. Rain days, double-threshold mornings

“It was pouring when I last did this, so it was nice to not have to deal with that on the road or track.”

Runner’s World — The Treadmill Workouts Pro Runners Swear By for Better Performance (Emilia Benton, Jan 3, 2026)

Runner’s World says Emily Infeld, a 2016 Olympian in the 10,000, “has trained in Portland, OR for much of the last decade, which has made her no stranger to hopping on the treadmill to escape cold and rainy conditions.” She told the magazine, “I have done quite a bit of work on the treadmill, I especially enjoy it for my double-threshold days for my morning session.” Her listed session is 4 x 1.25 miles at threshold pace on a 1% incline, with 85 to 90 seconds of rest. The same piece quotes Reed Fischer: “Threshold work [or half marathon pace for Fischer] is the best (in my opinion) bang for your buck on the treadmill.”

Runner’s World · Pro Treadmill Workouts
Smartwatch + Analog

Watch Desk

Indoors, a watch has no GPS, so it estimates pace from your arm. The Apple Watch Series 12 can take the real numbers from a compatible treadmill. The Mido Ocean Star 200C does the one job that is exact anywhere: elapsed time on the bezel, even when the treadmill resets.

Apple Watch Series 12 42mm black aluminum case with black sport band
Smartwatch · pairs with compatible gym treadmills

Apple Watch Series 12

~$390 · 42 mm · GPS · Black aluminum · Black Sport Band · Buy at Amazon

Apple lists the 42mm aluminum GPS model at 32.2 grams, with up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 10 hours of workout tracking. Apple’s price starts at $399. Photographed: Series 12, 42mm, Black aluminum, Black Sport Band.

Apple: “Your Apple Watch can pair and sync data with compatible cardio equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, indoor bikes, and more, providing you with more accurate information about your workout.”

Apple Support — Use gym equipment with Apple Watch

Why Series 12 here: On a compatible machine, Apple says to turn on Detect Gym Equipment and hold the watch “within a few centimeters of the contactless reader on the gym equipment.” Then the treadmill’s numbers go to the watch. At home, NPE says its Runn sensor, used with its heartbeatz Apple Watch app, sends your treadmill data to the watch. Honest caveat: Apple says to look for “Connects to Apple Watch” on the machine. Plenty of treadmills do not have it, and then the watch is back to estimating.

Analog · ceramic dive bezel, blue rubber

Mido Ocean Star 200C

~$1,300 · 42.5 mm · blue dial · blue rubber strap · Buy at Mido

Automatic dive watch with a unidirectional ceramic bezel and Mido’s Caliber 80, with up to 80 hours of power reserve. Mido lists it at 12.3mm thick, 140 grams, and 200 meters of water resistance. Photographed: Ocean Star 200C, M042.430.17.041.00.

Horbiter’s Giovanni Di Biase on the 200C’s bezel: “ceramic inlay’s lustre and exquisite build quality.”

Horbiter — The Mido Ocean Star 200C diving watch hands-on · Jul 31, 2021

Why go analog on the treadmill: Garmin’s Forerunner 945 manual says that with GPS off, “speed, distance, and cadence are calculated using the accelerometer in the device,” and that “Holding the handrails of the treadmill reduces accuracy.” Garmin’s fēnix 8 manual has you calibrate “on each treadmill or after each run.” So the pace on your wrist is a guess, and the belt is the real number. Time is the one thing that is exact indoors. Line the bezel up with the minute hand when you step on, and it keeps counting if the gym treadmill stops at 60 minutes and you have to restart it or switch machines. It also suits the reps: Fischer says threshold miles “will probably fall somewhere between five to 10 minutes.” Honest caveats: the review was written for the 200C’s 2021 launch, and Di Biase noted the watch “is not a lightweight by any means.” At 140 grams on rubber, it is more than four Series 12s.

Pair them. The Series 12 logs heart rate and takes the belt’s numbers when the machine allows it. The Ocean Star counts the minutes when the machine resets. Nobbs’s winter is Runner’s World’s “A 2:09 Marathoner Trained on a Treadmill for 3 Months” (Apr 21, 2026).

Mizuno Wave Rider 30 men’s running shoe Lime Pulp Black Oyster lateral view

01 · Shoe · the easy miles

Mizuno Wave Rider 30
~$150 · Men’s · Lime Pulp-Black Oyster · Buy at Mizuno

Neutral daily trainer with a nitrogen-infused ENERZY NXT midsole and, new for this version, a full-length Mizuno Wave Plate. Doctors of Running lists it at 9.4 oz in a men’s 9, with a 42.5 mm heel and 34.5 mm forefoot stack and an 8 mm drop. Photographed: men’s Wave Rider 30, Lime Pulp-Black Oyster.

Doctors of Running’s David Salas: “The Mizuno Wave Rider 30 is still best for daily runs, but it offers great versatility.”

Doctors of Running — Mizuno Wave Rider 30 Review (2026) · Jul 21, 2026

Why Wave Rider 30 here: Most treadmill miles are easy miles, and Nobbs ran his easy days at an 8:00 pace, about three minutes slower than his goal marathon pace. That is daily-trainer work. Salas adds that “At 9.4 ounces, the Wave Rider 30 also offers some upside for umptempo paces,” which covers the threshold day. Honest caveat from the same review: “The softer Enerzy NXT foam may push some traditional Wave Rider fans away.” Keep one pair for the belt and you never carry wet road grit onto it.

NPE Runn smart treadmill sensor black pod and mount

02 · Sensor · make the belt honest

NPE Runn Smart Treadmill Sensor
~$125 · Buy at Amazon

A small pod that sticks to the treadmill beside the belt. It reads small reflective stickers on the belt and sends speed, incline, and cadence over ANT+ and Bluetooth. NPE lists up to 15 hours per charge. Photographed: Runn, black.

North Pole Engineering: “Runn is factory calibrated to be accurate to within .1mph at a 5mph treadmill pace to ensure accurate readings right out of the box.”

North Pole Engineering — Runn Smart Treadmill Sensor

Why Runn here: Your wrist is estimating, and the belt knows. NPE says it “Links virtually any treadmill to your fitness app” and is “especially helpful for non-motorized treadmills and treadmills with worn parts.” This is a home-treadmill piece, not something to stick on the gym’s machine. Honest caveat from DC Rainmaker’s Runn guide (Jan 16, 2020): on his textured belt, “in some cases the stickers would last about 4 rotations before flying off.” Clean the belt before you stick them on.

Vornado 660 large whole room air circulator fan black

03 · Fan · the missing wind

Vornado 660 Air Circulator
~$120 · Black · Buy at Amazon

Large air circulator with four speeds and a 90-degree tilt. The listing says it can “move air up to 100 ft.” Photographed: Vornado 660, Black.

Chaski coach Ashley Brasovan, via Runner’s World: “When you’re on the treadmill, you don’t have the breeze of being outside and moving through the air.”

Runner’s World — How to Run Longer on the Treadmill (Emilia Benton, Sep 10, 2020)

Why the 660 here: Runner’s World’s Aly Ellis (Jun 26, 2025) said built-in treadmill fans are “about as strong as someone blowing at you through a straw and only point at your face.” After she put a fan in front of hers, “Suddenly, my runs were much more pleasant.” Tilt the 660 up at your chest from the front of the deck. Ellis used a $30 box fan, and that works too.

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds with earhooks and charging case jet black

04 · Sound · turn your brain off

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2
~$200 · Jet Black · Buy at Amazon

Earhook earbuds with active noise cancelling, Transparency mode, and a built-in heart-rate sensor. The listing says up to 45 hours with the charging case. Photographed: Powerbeats Pro 2, Jet Black.

Beats: “Powerbeats Pro 2 is sweat and water resistant, with an IPX4 rating.”

Beats — Powerbeats Pro 2

Why Powerbeats here: The treadmill is the one run with no traffic to listen for. Infeld told Runner’s World about her treadmill threshold session: “I like this workout because I can listen to music and turn my brain off.” The listing says the earbud sensors read heart rate “without a chest strap or watch.” Honest caveat from Beats: “The charging case is not sweat- or water-resistant.” Leave it in the bag, not on the console.

Owala FreeSip 24 oz insulated stainless steel water bottle Very Very Dark black

05 · Bottle · the mini aid station

Owala FreeSip 24 oz
~$30 · Very, Very Dark · Buy at Amazon

Insulated stainless-steel bottle with a FreeSip spout, so you can sip through the straw or tilt it back. The lid locks. Photographed: FreeSip 24 oz, Very, Very Dark.

Owala, on the listing: “Double-wall insulation keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours.”

Owala — FreeSip Stainless Steel Water Bottle 24 oz

Why FreeSip here: Runner’s World’s Benton suggests the treadmill is a place where “You can also set up a mini aid station to practice fueling for future races.” A one-handed sip at speed is the point. Honest caveat from the same listing: “This bottle is wider than standard cupholders and may only fit in oversized or specialty cupholders designed for larger containers.” Check your treadmill’s holder, or set it on the console.

DripDrop electrolyte drink mix lemon 32 sticks pouch

06 · Electrolytes · the indoor sweat

DripDrop Electrolyte Powder
~$33 · Lemon · 32 sticks · Buy at Amazon

Single-serve electrolyte drink mix sticks. Photographed: DripDrop, Lemon, 32-count.

DripDrop: “Mix 1 packet into 8 oz of water for effective hydration.”

DripDrop — Hydration Lemon Electrolyte Packets

Why DripDrop here: Runner’s World’s Benton writes, “Some runners, in fact, sweat even more on the treadmill than they do when they’re outside.” Mix a stick into the bottle before the long one. One stick is meant for 8 oz, so in a 24 oz bottle it is diluted unless you add more. Use what you trained with, and this is not medical advice.

Rainleaf microfiber quick dry towel army green with carry bag

07 · Towel · over the screen

Rainleaf Microfiber Towel
~$13 · 48" x 24" · Army Green · Buy at Amazon

Quick-dry microfiber towel with a snap loop and a vented carry bag. Machine washable. Photographed: Rainleaf Microfiber Towel, Army Green.

Rainleaf: “Absorbs water 5 times of its own weight.”

Rainleaf — Microfiber Towel

Why a towel here: Two jobs. One is the sweat. The other is Nobbs’s trick: on easy days “he covers the screen with a towel during easy efforts” and runs by feel. At 48 by 24 inches, it covers most consoles. Snap it to the side rail so it does not end up under the belt.
