Vertical Kilometer

A thousand meters of climbing in under five kilometers. No flats, no coasting, and sometimes no way down but your own legs.

This is the kit for the vertical kilometer: 1,000 meters of gain in less than 5 kilometers, the definition CU Boulder researchers used when they put mountain runners on a steep treadmill. It takes two climbs that come up a little short of the full thousand and make up for it in steepness. One is the Broken Arrow Ascent at Palisades Tahoe, a World Cup uphill that iRunFar calls “just shy of a vertical kilometer.” The other is Siphon Draw to the Flatiron above Lost Dutchman State Park, about 2,600 feet in three miles, with nearly half of it in the last mile.

The thesis is that on grades this steep you walk, and the kit is built for walking fast. A North Face Summit Vectiv Sky 2 for grip. LEKI’s lightest folding poles, a Naked band that holds them at your back when your hands go on rock, and half-finger Black Diamond gloves for the hand line, the ladder, and the wall. A Garmin HRM 600 for the effort number, one caffeinated SiS gel, PH 1500 for desert mornings, an Arc’teryx Norvan for the ridge, a Trails Illustrated map for the Flatiron’s unsigned upper mile, and an OR Sun Runner Cap. On the wrist, a Garmin Forerunner 970 that counts down the ascent left, and a Citizen Promaster Altichron that shows the climb with a hand.

Note.

Confirm current pricing at the retailer. Lost Dutchman charges a per-vehicle entrance fee, its trails are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and walk-in entry and hiker drop-off are not permitted. Arizona State Parks does not recommend Siphon Draw in hot weather, and the climb to the Flatiron is not a designated, maintained trail all the way. The Broken Arrow Ascent is a mountain race with exposure, a hand line, and a ladder, and entrants must be 16 or older. If you are new to poles, practice with them before race day.

Up the ladder

“Top runners have no choice but to go hard from the start, and the Broken Arrow Ascent course doesn’t wait around either.”

iRunFar — 2026 Broken Arrow Ascent Results: Anna Gibson and Patrick Kipngeno Win Again (Justin Mock)

Justin Mock’s race report has the whole format in it. The 2026 Ascent ran 3.6 miles and 2,840 feet up Washeshu Peak to a finish at 9,000 feet. In his words, “That’s 5.6 kilometers and 865 meters, just shy of a vertical kilometer.” Anna Gibson won in 43:15. She trailed Kenya’s Joyce Njeru onto the Stairway to Heaven ladder and passed her late, and Njeru finished eight seconds back. Patrick Kipngeno of Kenya won the men’s race in 37:59, his second win there after 2024, and Cam Smith took the U.S. uphill title in 38:10. The race was part of the Mountain Running World Cup and doubled as the U.S. Mountain Running Championships uphill race.

Note the ladder. Near the top, a VK stops being a run and becomes a climb. The kit has to let go of the poles when your hands are needed, and then pick them back up.

CU Boulder’s Rodger Kram on why VK racers walk: “For either running or walking, slopes between 20 and 35 degrees require nearly the same amount of energy to climb the hill at the same vertical velocity.” At the speed his team tested, walking used about nine percent less energy than running.

His advice, given a choice of trails up a mountain: “choosing the second trail (30 degrees) and walking as fast as you can within your aerobic capacity is the fastest way to go.”

Siphon Draw to the Flatiron

“This last mile demands everything you’ve got.”

Arizona Highways — Siphon Draw/Flatiron Trail (Robert Stieve)

The route starts at 2,058 feet inside Lost Dutchman State Park, crosses into the Tonto National Forest and then the Superstition Wilderness, and climbs into Siphon Draw to a saddle at 3,389 feet. From there it is a route-finding climb up a wash to the Flatiron at 4,671 feet, which Arizona Highways calls “an hourlong (at least) slog,” with an 8-foot wall of rock below the top. Arizona State Parks lists the Flatiron at 5.8 miles round trip and says it “is not a designated, maintained trail all the way.” The park recommends at least five hours, at least a gallon of water per person per day, and no attempt in hot weather. Trails are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entry is $10 per vehicle with one person or $20 with two to four, and walk-in entry and hiker drop-off are not permitted.

Broken Arrow Ascent · Washeshu Peak

“In scenarios of adverse weather and/or high winds, the traditional tram download from High Camp may not be available.”

Broken Arrow Skyrace — Ascent

The race lists 3.61 miles and 2,840 feet from the valley to the 9,000-foot summit of Washeshu Peak, over technical off-trail talus, with a bolted hand line on the Headwall Ridge and the Stairway to Heaven ladder near the top. Most years runners ride the tram down from High Camp. In adverse weather or high winds the tram may not run, and you walk down. It is a WMRA World Cup vertical uphill and hosted the 2026 USATF uphill championship. Entrants must be 16 or older, and entry was $105 in 2026. The 2026 Ascent ran June 19, and registration for 2027 opens December 7, 2026.

DC Rainmaker’s Ray Maker, on a climb of his own: “ClimbPro showing my total ascent left on this particular climb, using navigation/routing.”

DC Rainmaker — Garmin Forerunner 970 In-Depth Review · Jun 16, 2025

Why 970 here: Load the course and ClimbPro counts down the vertical that is left, which is the only number a VK cares about. Pair it with the HRM 600 for heart rate from the chest. Honest caveat from the same review: the price “jumped a painful $150 more, up to a staggering $749.”

aBlogtoWatch’s Ariel Adams: “an all-analog timepiece that combines time-telling with a compass and altimeter.”

aBlogtoWatch — Citizen Promaster Altichron · Nov 22, 2017

Why go analog on a VK: The race is scored in vertical, so put the vertical on the dial. Set the altimeter at the start (the Siphon Draw trailhead sits at 2,058 feet, per Arizona Highways), and from then on one glance at the hand shows how much of the climb is below you. There is no screen to wake and no data page to scroll with a pole in each hand, and the movement charges on light. Adams’ caveat applies: it is for “when altitude is needed, but not in a super precise manner.” Read it for progress and let the Garmin keep the splits.

Pair them. The 970 and the chest strap keep the effort honest, which is Kram’s “as fast as you can within your aerobic capacity.” The Altichron answers the question you ask at every switchback, which is how much is left. One gives you a number. The other gives you a hand that climbs.

The North Face Summit Vectiv Sky 2 trail running shoe Lava Red/Calacatta lateral view

01 · Shoes · steep and grippy

The North Face Summit Vectiv Sky 2
~$230 · Lava Red/Calacatta · unisex sizing · Buy at Running Warehouse

Lightweight trail racer with a full-length Vectiv 3.0 carbon plate, nitrogen-infused Dream foam, a rockered midsole, and a Surface Ctrl outsole with 5 mm lugs. iRunFar measured 8.4 oz in a men’s 9, with a 6 mm drop. Photographed: Summit Vectiv Sky 2 Lava Red/Calacatta.

iRunFar’s Craig Randall and Bryon Powell: “it’s fun, extremely fast, and highly effective to run in.”

iRunFar — Best Lightweight Trail Running Shoes of 2026 · Feb 21, 2026

Why Vectiv Sky 2 here: iRunFar’s lightweight guide names vertical kilometers as the kind of race these shoes are for, and the Sky 2 is its best overall pick. The deeper lugs and Surface Ctrl rubber are for Flatiron rock and Washeshu talus. Honest caveat from the same guide: “the low stack and midsole may leave you hurting after a 1,000-foot descent.” From the Flatiron, you walk down more than 2,000 feet.

LEKI Neotrail Pro FX.One Superlite folding carbon trail running poles

02 · Poles · race-day light

LEKI Neotrail Pro FX.One Superlite
~$210 / pair · Buy at LEKI

Folding carbon race pole with a push-button fold, a foam Spartan grip, a D-Loop strap, and a carbide tip. LEKI lists 113 to 127 g per pole depending on length, and 33 to 38 cm folded. iRunFar weighed a 115 cm pair at 232 g. Photographed: Neotrail Pro FX.One Superlite.

iRunFar: “If you’re looking for a race pole, we recommend the Leki Neotrail Pro Fx.One Superlite.”

iRunFar — Best Trekking Poles of 2026 (Carly Eisley, Eszter Horanyi) · Apr 16, 2026

Why Neotrail here: Broken Arrow says poles are “HIGHLY encouraged based on the extreme vertical nature of the event,” and if you start with them, you carry them to the top. iRunFar notes that some VK racers use non-folding poles. These fold, because both climbs here have a ladder or a wall where the poles have to go away. Caveat from the same guide: they are “more likely to break than heavier poles.”

Naked Running Band waist belt Raven back view with pole loops

03 · Carry · poles at your back

Naked Running Band
~$55 · Raven · sized by waist · Buy at Naked

5-inch-wide mesh waist band, 2.3 oz, with silicone grip loops for poles or a layer, race-number attachments, room for gels and a phone, and up to three 500 ml soft flasks. Twelve unisex sizes, sized differently from your pants. Photographed: Running Band, Raven, back view.

iRunFar: “The iRunFar team doesn’t recommend storing poles on the front of a pack because a fall can cause injury.”

iRunFar — Best Trekking Poles of 2026 · Apr 16, 2026

Why the band here: A VK needs a short list: water, a few gels, a phone, a whistle, a shell. Broken Arrow suggests a vest for it, and the band is the lighter way to carry the same list. Clip the bib on the front, fold the poles into the back loops when your hands go on rock, and keep the flasks in the side pockets.

500 ml soft flask made by HydraPak, 30 g, with a 28 mm cap and a high-flow bite valve. It shrinks as you drink. Photographed: Running Flask 500 ml.

Arizona State Parks: “Each person should carry at least one gallon of drinking water per day.”

Arizona State Parks — Lost Dutchman trails

Why flasks here: Broken Arrow’s list starts at 16 oz of water, and one flask covers it. The Flatiron is a five-hour day in the desert, so fill three for the band and leave more in the car.

Black Diamond Crag Half-Finger Gloves

Half-finger cragging glove with a synthetic leather palm, knuckle padding, and a low-profile hook-and-loop wrist strap. 71 g. Black Diamond makes it for belaying and via ferrata. Photographed: Crag Half-Finger, Black.

Broken Arrow Skyrace: the Headwall Ridge comes “complete with stunning views of Lake Tahoe, a bolted hand line, and the infamous ‘Stairway to Heaven’ ladder.”

Broken Arrow Skyrace — Ascent

Why gloves here: Poles rub, granite bites, and a hand line is a rope. Half fingers keep the grip on the pole handles and leave your fingertips free for a gel wrapper. On the Flatiron, they are for the 8-foot wall below the top.

Garmin HRM 600 chest strap heart rate monitor

06 · Effort · chest strap

Garmin HRM 600
~$160–$170 · M–XL · Buy at Amazon

Rechargeable chest strap that sends heart rate and HRV to the watch, records on its own when no watch is worn, and adds running dynamics. Garmin lists up to two months per charge, and the strap is machine washable once the module comes off. Photographed: HRM 600.

Garmin: the HRM 600 “sends pace and distance data from indoor track and treadmill runs to compatible smartwatches.”

Garmin — HRM 600 announcement · May 15, 2025

Why the strap here: Kram’s rule is to walk “as fast as you can within your aerobic capacity,” and that is a heart rate question. The strap reads it at the chest. It also carries treadmill pace, which matters in a Phoenix summer, when the Flatiron is off the table and VK training moves to a steep treadmill.

Science in Sport: “A fast-acting blend of 22g of liquid carbohydrates and 75mg of caffeine to power both body and mind during training or competition.”

Science in Sport — GO Energy + Caffeine Gels

Why SiS here: The 2026 winners finished in 37:59 and 43:15. That is a climb short enough that one gel at the start line does most of the work. Broken Arrow still suggests carrying extra gels, 400 calories minimum, so pack a few more for the slow day and the walk down. 75 mg is a real dose of caffeine, so try it in training first.

~$12 · 10 tablets · Buy at Precision Fuel & Hydration

Effervescent electrolyte tablet, the brand’s strongest. One tablet goes in 16 oz of water. Photographed: PH 1500 tablet tube.

Precision Fuel & Hydration: “Dissolve 1 tablet into 16oz of water and drink ~90 minutes before you start events and key workouts.”

Precision Fuel & Hydration — PH 1500

Why PH 1500 here: Arizona State Parks warns that summer at Lost Dutchman often runs past 100°F. Start the Flatiron topped up, and carry a tablet for a refill if you are a heavy, salty sweater, which is who the brand makes it for.

Arc’teryx: “Superlight, highly packable, ultra-minimalist trail running windshell.”

Arc’teryx — Norvan Windshell Hoody

Why Norvan here: The Ascent finishes on an exposed ridge at 9,000 feet. Broken Arrow says that about once every five years the wind shuts the tram, and then “you will be responsible for descending to the valley floor.” At under four ounces, this is the shell you will actually carry for that day.

Arizona State Parks: “Those planning to use the longer trails should carry a topographic map.”

Arizona State Parks — Lost Dutchman trails

Why the map here: Above the Siphon Draw saddle, Arizona Highways warns that side trails “will try to draw you in.” Its rule for the wash is “Left is right.” Learn the shape of the drainage before you start up it.

Broken Arrow Skyrace — Ascent

Why Sun Runner here: Your head is down for the whole climb, so the sun lands on your neck. The cape covers it, and the chin cord holds the cap on in the wind. Clip the cape on for the desert, and leave it off at Tahoe if you like.

The kit for
vertical kilometer shit.

This kit is for uphill-only racing and steep summit days: a shoe that grips rock and talus, light folding poles, a band that holds them when your hands go on rock, gloves for the hand line and the ladder, a chest strap for the effort, a little fuel and salt, a shell for the ridge, a map for the unsigned mile, and a cap for the sun. The North Face Summit Vectiv Sky 2, LEKI Neotrail Pro FX.One Superlite, Naked Running Band and Flask, Black Diamond Crag, Garmin HRM 600, SiS GO Energy + Caffeine, PH 1500, Arc’teryx Norvan Windshell, Trails Illustrated #851, OR Sun Runner; Garmin Forerunner 970 + Citizen Promaster Altichron.
