XC Race Day

Grass, dirt, hills, a box on the start line, and a team score. Spikes where they are allowed, flats where they are not, and something warm for the long wait in the team camp.

This is the kit for cross country race day: a scored race over grass and dirt, where your place counts more than your time. It takes two courses. One is the Arizona Interscholastic Association state championships at Cave Creek Golf Course in north Phoenix, 3.1 miles, where spikes are not allowed. The other is Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, where cross country has been raced since 1912 (or 1913 or 1914, depending on who you ask), and where New York Road Runners holds a cross country 5K series this fall that is open to adults.

The thesis is that XC is two shoes and a long day. A Saucony Endorphin XC spike for the Bronx and a Saucony Kilkenny XC 10 Flat for the Arizona rule, Feetures Elite Ultra Light socks, and a Champ mesh bag for whichever pair comes back muddy. A Tracksmith Van Cortlandt Singlet with its sash and a Path Projects Altira split short. Skratch caffeinated chews in the start box, a Dryrobe Advance and a Matador Pocket Blanket for the team camp, Supergoop! for an open course, and OOFOS clogs for after. On the wrist, a Suunto Run for the splits and a Vaer C5 Field Solar that only tells the time.

Note.

Confirm current pricing at the retailer. The Arizona state meet is a high school championship: athletes qualify through the sectionals, and spectator tickets are sold on GoFan only, with no cash. Spikes are not allowed at the Arizona sectionals or the state meet. The NYRR Cross Country Series #3 is open to adult runners, was listed as near capacity when we checked, and entry fees are non-refundable and may not be deferred or transferred. Check each race’s final instructions on footwear.

Not a place to run your fastest.

“Though athletes do run fast at VCP, it’s not a place to run your fastest. It never has been.”

MileSplit — Course of History: Van Cortlandt Park (Paul Snyder)

Paul Snyder’s history of Van Cortlandt Park starts with glaciers. When they receded about 17,000 years ago, they gave the 1,146 acres that became the park its shape: “a vast field which erupts into ridges and undulating hillside.” Races start fast on the Parade Ground, “the Flats.” On the 2.5-mile high school course, runners have about a quarter of a mile to sort themselves out before the Cow Path, then climb Freshman Hill and cross a bridge over a highway into the Back Hills, roughly 2 kilometers of what Snyder calls “quad-searing” hills. The final kilometer drops back to the Flats for a sprint to the finish.

The city first improved the footing in 1979 and refurbished it again in 1997, when a painted steel tortoise-and-hare statue went in. That is Snyder’s point: “athletes tend to be awarded for their patience at Van Cortlandt Park, even with a faster surface.” Go out too hard and the Back Hills take it back. Race the people around you, not the watch.

The course, by the numbers

Van Cortlandt: 1,146 acres, a 2.5-mile high school course, and some races at 5 kilometers. MileSplit lists the 2.5-mile course records as of 2025 as Katelyn Tuohy’s 13:21.8 and Edward Cheserek’s 11:55.4. The Manhattan Invitational has been held there since 1973.

Cave Creek: 3.1 miles, closed for practice all year, timed by Finished Results, and individual medals for the top 21 places in each race.

NYRR Cross Country Series #3

“Experience the pure joy of running through the picturesque trails of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx this fall!”

New York Road Runners — NYRR Cross Country Series #3

The last race of NYRR’s 2026 series is a scored 5K on Sunday, November 15, at 9:00 a.m. Entry is $16 for NYRR members and $21.15 for non-members, and the race was listed as near capacity when we checked. Numbers, which include your timing tag, are picked up at the NYRR RUN Center at 320 West 57th Street. Race-day bib pickup closes 10 minutes after the start. Only clear bags can be checked, no larger than 17 by 20 by 7 inches. Awards go to the top three overall in the men’s, women’s, and nonbinary divisions. Kids 2 to 18 can run the free Rising NYRR races the same morning; registration is required.

Two lanes for a race that is scored by place. The Suunto Run records the splits for later. The Vaer C5 Field Solar tells you when to start your warm-up, and nothing else.

Suunto Run GPS running watch All Black with AMOLED display
Smartwatch · light, dual-frequency GPS

Suunto Run

~$249 · All Black · Buy at Suunto

AMOLED running watch with three buttons, one of them a digital crown, dual-frequency GPS, offline music, and training and recovery features. DC Rainmaker weighed it at 36 g with the 22 mm fabric strap, 11.5 mm thick. Photographed: Suunto Run, All Black.

DC Rainmaker’s Ray Maker: “Priced at $249, the Suunto Run comes in strong.”

DC Rainmaker — Suunto Run In-Depth Review · May 13, 2025

Why Suunto Run here: It is light enough to forget on the wrist in a race, and Maker found its GPS held well “down along some cliff edges in the trees.” Afterward it shows how much time you lost in the Back Hills. Honest caveats from the same review: he found optical heart rate weaker than Garmin’s, and he says the charger’s magnets are “wimpier than trying to use a single square of toilet paper after Taco Bell.”

Vaer C5 Field Black Solar 40mm field watch black dial on khaki nylon strap
Analog · solar field watch

Vaer C5 Field Black Solar

~$349 · 40 mm · black dial · khaki nylon strap · Buy at Vaer

40 mm 316L stainless steel field watch with a domed sapphire crystal, a locking screw-down crown, 10ATM water resistance, and an Epson VS-42 solar quartz movement. Vaer says six hours of light gives six months of power reserve. Photographed: C5 Field Black Solar on khaki nylon.

AllOutdoor’s Patrik Orcutt: “The dial’s legibility was great. White numerals contrasted sharply against the black matte background.”

AllOutdoor — Review: VAER C5 Field Solar 40mm Watch · Jul 11, 2025

Why go analog for cross country: Snyder’s line about Van Cortlandt is the case for it: “it’s not a place to run your fastest.” Van Cortlandt’s high school course is 2.5 miles and Cave Creek’s is 3.1, so a time from one tells you little about the other. The result that counts is your place. A plain field watch tells you when to start the warm-up, when to strip down, and when to get to the box, with nothing to charge in a team tent. Orcutt liked the solar movement for the same reason: “I do hate having to charge the smartwatches in my collection.” AllOutdoor also reports that Vaer assembles “a significant portion of its watches” in Scottsdale. Honest caveat: Orcutt notes that at about $350, “some might argue the price is high for a quartz-powered watch, even a solar one.”

Pair them. The Vaer runs the day: warm-up, strides, the box, the gun. The Suunto keeps the splits for the bus ride home. Snyder’s piece is MileSplit’s “Course of History: Van Cortlandt Park” (Jul 9, 2026).

Saucony Endorphin XC cross country spike White/Mutant lateral view

01 · Spikes · the Bronx shoe

Saucony Endorphin XC
~$190 · White/Mutant · unisex sizing · Buy at Fleet Feet

Cross country spike with a supercritical TPEE midsole, a three-quarter-length horseshoe-shaped carbon plate, and a six-pin removable spike plate. Outside measured 5.5 oz in a men’s 9. Photographed: Endorphin XC, White/Mutant.

An Outside tester: “It provides a premium, fast, and aggressive type of comfort.”

Outside — The 5 Best Cross-Country Spikes of 2026 (Cory Smith) · Aug 27, 2026

Why Endorphin XC here: Outside named it the best overall XC spike of 2026, with an outsole that is grippy “with or without spikes.” Honest caveat from the same test: at $190 it was the most expensive spike they tested. Van Cortlandt’s Flats are grass and the Back Hills are packed gravel, so this is the shoe for the Bronx. Check the race’s final instructions before you screw in the pins.

Saucony Kilkenny XC 10 Flat spikeless cross country shoe Black/White

02 · Flats · the Arizona rule

Saucony Kilkenny XC 10 Flat
~$85 · Black/White · Buy at Fleet Feet

Spikeless version of Saucony’s budget cross country shoe. Outside says Saucony added 7 millimeters of foam to the midsole of the Kilkenny XC10, with a mesh upper that is thicker than most spikes and padding around the collar and tongue. Photographed: Kilkenny XC 10 Flat, Black/White.

An Outside tester: “The Saucony Kilkenny XC10 Spikes feel incredibly comfortable right out of the box, offering a soft, reliable, and traditional fit.”

Outside — The 5 Best Cross-Country Spikes of 2026 (Cory Smith) · Aug 27, 2026

Why Kilkenny Flat here: The AIA’s tournament guide says it plainly: “Spikes are not allowed on the sectional courses or the state championship course.” So the Arizona state meet is a flats race on golf-course grass. Outside named the Kilkenny XC10 its best budget pick and liked that it comes in “Both a spiked and flat version.” Honest caveat from the same test: the “Upper runs warm and lacks breathability,” and Phoenix can still be warm in mid-November.

Tracksmith Van Cortlandt Singlet men’s racing singlet Raspberry/Ivory with sash

03 · Singlet · the sash

Tracksmith Van Cortlandt Singlet
~$75 · Men’s · Raspberry/Ivory · XS–XXL · Buy at Tracksmith

Mesh racing singlet with a diagonal sash. Tracksmith says its singlets have been refined to fit true to size. Photographed: Van Cortlandt Singlet, Raspberry/Ivory.

Tracksmith: “Our signature mesh racing top is cut for performance and finished with a statement-making sash.”

Tracksmith — Van Cortlandt Singlet

Why Van Cortlandt here: It is named for the park in the Bronx. Tracksmith says the Van Cortlandt Singlet and Shorts “were the first two products designed as part of Tracksmith’s debut collection in 2014,” and that the sash comes from 19th-century Cornell teams, whose athletes earned a satin sash for scoring at the league championships. In cross country, scoring is the whole point. If you race for a team or club, wear its uniform.

Path Projects Altira Short 3 inch split running short Fjord blue

04 · Shorts · split and stitch-free

Path Projects Altira Short
~$88 · Fjord · 3-inch · XS–XL · Buy at Path Projects

Three-inch split race short in an ultralight stretch fabric from Toray, with Acrofuse stitch-free seams and quickdraw pockets that Path Projects says hold eight gels. Photographed: Altira Short, Fjord.

Path Projects: “Our most lightweight short, built for race days and peak efforts.”

Path Projects — Altira Short

Why Altira here: A 5K cross country race does not need eight gels. It does need a short that stays out of the way on Freshman Hill and has a pocket for the caffeine chews you eat in the start box.

Feetures Elite Ultra Light Tab running sock Woodland Forest green

05 · Socks · thin under a spike

Feetures Elite Ultra Light Tab
~$19 · Woodland Forest · S–XL · Buy at Feetures

Ultra-light no-show running sock with targeted compression and a heel tab. Photographed: Elite Ultra Light Tab, Woodland Forest.

Feetures: “Targeted compression and a protective heel tab help keep blisters out of your way.”

Feetures — Elite Ultra Light Tab

Why Ultra Light here: Outside notes that XC spikes have very little cushioning compared to regular running shoes. A thick sock does not fix that. It just takes up room in a snug race shoe. The tab keeps the heel from slipping down when the shoe gets wet on a muddy course.

Champ Shoe Bag black mesh zippered shoe bag

06 · Bag · for the muddy pair

Champ Shoe Bag
~$17 · Black mesh · Buy at Champ

Lightweight zippered shoe bag made of breathable mesh, with a pocket inside. Champ makes spikes and cleats. Photographed: Champ Shoe Bag.

Champ: the bag is “made of breathable mesh material.”

Champ — Champ Shoe Bag

Why a shoe bag here: Outside’s spike guide warns that “you’ll get at least one downright nasty, wet, and muddy course.” The spikes come off at the finish and go straight into a bag that breathes, not loose into your backpack. The inside pocket holds the spare pins.

Skratch Labs Energy Chews Sour Cherry with caffeine pouch

07 · Caffeine · in the start box

Skratch Labs Energy Chews
~$2.75 a pouch · ~$27 for 10 · Sour Cherry + Caffeine · Buy at Skratch Labs

Fruit-flavored energy chews. Skratch lists 80 calories and 19 g of carbohydrate per serving, and says the Sour Cherry flavor adds 50 mg of caffeine per pack from green tea. Photographed: Sour Cherry + Caffeine.

Skratch Labs: “It’s like a gumdrop that’s actually a delicious high-performance fruit-drop.”

Skratch Labs — Energy Chews Sport Fuel

Why Skratch here: An XC race is too short to fuel during it. A pouch in the start box is the whole nutrition plan, and chews are easier to manage in a team tent than a gel. Know how much caffeine you are used to before race day.

Dryrobe Advance long sleeve changing robe Burnt Orange back view

08 · Warm-up · the team camp

Dryrobe Advance Changing Robe
~$175 · Burnt Orange · XS–XL · Buy at Dryrobe

Long-sleeve changing robe with a waterproof, windproof outer and a quick-drying fleece lining, in an oversized fit. Burnt Orange has a Sand Camo inner. Photographed: Advance Changing Robe, Burnt Orange.

Dryrobe: “The original waterproof changing robe, it has been trusted by athletes and everyday adventurers since 2010.”

Dryrobe — Burnt Orange Advance Changing Robe

Why Dryrobe here: Cross country is a lot of standing around between the warm-up and the gun. Wear it over your singlet in the team camp, change your shoes under it, and drop it at the line. In the Bronx in mid-November, you will want it again at the finish.

Matador Pocket Blanket black folded in its pocket pouch

09 · Camp · somewhere dry to sit

Matador Pocket Blanket
~$35 · Black · Buy at Matador

Packable picnic blanket that folds back into its own pocket. Photographed: Pocket Blanket, Black.

Matador: “The Pocket Blanket™ gives you a clean, dry place to sit — anywhere you go.”

Matador — Pocket Blanket

Why Matador here: At the Arizona state meet, team camps are restricted to the golf course’s driving range, and you may be there for hours. Divisions I and III are told not to arrive before 10:45 a.m., and the last race goes at 2:00 p.m. Something dry to sit on is worth carrying.

Supergoop PLAY Everyday Sunscreen Stick SPF 50

10 · Skin · Phoenix afternoon

Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Sunscreen Stick SPF 50
~$22 · 1.4 oz · Buy at Supergoop!

Clear-gliding SPF 50 sunscreen stick that Supergoop! calls water- and sweat-resistant. Photographed: PLAY Everyday Sunscreen Stick SPF 50.

Supergoop!: it “glides on smoothly, applies clear and is water- and sweat-resistant.”

Supergoop! — PLAY Everyday Sunscreen Stick SPF 50

Why Supergoop! here: The Arizona state races run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on an open golf course. A stick goes on your face and shoulders in the team camp without getting lotion on your hands before you lace up.

OOFOS OOcloog recovery clog black

11 · After · out of the spikes

OOFOS OOcloog
~$80 · Men’s · Black · 4–14 · Buy at OOFOS

Closed-toe foam recovery clog. Photographed: Men’s OOcloog, Black.

OOFOS: “A versatile clog that brings unmatched comfort into your everyday work or leisure routine.”

OOFOS — Men’s OOcloog Clog

Why OOcloog here: After the race, your feet have been in a thin, tight spike for 3.1 miles. A closed clog keeps wet grass and gravel off your socks on the walk back to the tent or the bus.
